  • Showing that you respect the way a young person self identifies can create a safe space that is affirming for gender diverse youth.

Important considerations:

  • Address a young person based how they self-identify.
  • Provide your own pronouns to demonstrate that you are informed.
  • Some youth may choose multiple pronouns. It is okay to ask if there is a preference.
  • Some youth may prefer no pronouns, and only wish to be referred to by their name.
  • Some youth might go by a name that is different then what is on their health cards or documents. Always address youth by the name and pronouns they have provided to you.

Responding to youth asking why they are being asked this question:

Asking this question can help us to make sure we and all of our service providers are addressing youth based on how they self-identify throughout their time accessing YWHO services.
