Legal System Involvement
The question:
Have you ever had legal system involvement? |
---|
|
Rationale for this question:
- To understand if the youth accessing YWHO services are currently involved with the legal system and have obligations in terms of serving time within the legal system. This might affect the continuity of services provided by the YWHO hub team.
- People with mental health issues are overrepresented in the legal system. This data is being collected to better understand how to provide care and build better support structures that will help youth and reduce recidivism.
- This data is also being collected to understand behavioural/clinical tools the YWHO staff might need to address complex and unique issues that arise from a person being justice-involved.
Important Considerations:
- In Canada, violence in the general population is low relative to most other countries. However, according to a study published by Bourget D. el-Guebaly N. Atkinson MJ. titled “Assessing and managing violent patients,” the authors found that majority of psychiatrists are involved in the management and treatment of violent behaviour, and 50% report having been assaulted by a patient at least once.
