Catalyst requires all users to have a user account.  There are two types of Catalyst accounts:

  • User accounts
  • Agency Administrator accounts

In addition to this, there are several system modules including one for "Administration" privileges (managed in the User Privileges section of an account) that can be turned on or off for a user or administrator.  These privileges provide access to the administration module within Catalyst (i.e. access to updating Activity Lists, Selection Lists, etc.).

The Reports Module within Catalyst requires a separate report account - access to this module is not included in either the user account or administrator account.

Creating a new account includes giving a user a User ID, a password, specifying user type (Agency Administrator or User) and preferred language, and determining which parts of Catalyst the person will have access to, and what sort of access (privileges) they will have in the 'System Modules'. 

Step-by-step guide

  1. Log into Catalyst using the site number of the user you wish to create (i.e. if you're adding pjohnson to the system and his home site should be 02, then use 02 in the Site # field when logging in).  This is important for multi-site agencies that have different activities for each site.
  2. From the toolbar at the top of any screen, go to 'Admin' > 'User Profile'. This will take you to the User Maintenance screen.
  3. On the User Maintenance screen select 'Add New User'.  This will take you to the Add User screen.


  4. Complete the fields in the Add User screen.
  5. Create and type a new User ID, (DATIS recommends using first initial and last name but this must be unique within your agency) in the User ID field.
  6. Create and type a new password.  See Password Information and Requirements for more details on password best practices.
  7. In the User Type field, select either Agency User or Agency Administrator from the selection list.
  8. At this point, the only other piece of required information is Language Preference.  This is of great value to French language agencies as it gives the option to see all screens in French.



  9. Once you have entered all user information you wish to capture, click on 'Save' to create the new user. This will take you to the Edit User screen. See Adding/Editing/Deleting User Privileges in Catalyst to set your new user's privileges.

Note: DATIS strongly encourages agencies to NOT provide all users with Administrative status.  Doing so increases the risk of regular users making unauthorized changes within the agency database.

Note: Unless the user is a temporary staff member, do not fill out the Account Expiry Date information, as the account will become inactive on the date entered.

Note: The Position field is agency-controlled and populated in the Selection List Maintenance module.  Refer to Adding to an Agency Maintained Selection List for more information and instructions on populating this field.

Note:  The DATIS Service Desk is a separate application requiring a separate login.
